PC Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Computer Running Fast
Just like your car needs an oil change, your computer needs regular maintenance to stay fast and reliable. Here is a simple annual checklist to keep your PC running at its best.
The Annual Computer Maintenance Checklist Every Homeowner Needs
Most people only think about their computer when something goes wrong. But just like your car needs regular oil changes and tire rotations, your computer benefits enormously from routine maintenance.
The good news: most of these tasks take just a few minutes, and doing them once a year can add years to your computer's life and keep it running fast in between.
Here's the checklist we recommend to every customer.
Every Month
✅ Restart Your Computer
This sounds almost too simple, but many people leave their computers in sleep mode for weeks or months at a time. A full restart clears your RAM, applies pending updates, and gives your system a fresh start. If your computer has been feeling sluggish, try restarting it before calling anyone.
✅ Check for Windows/macOS Updates
Operating system updates aren't just about new features — they include critical security patches that protect you from the latest threats. Set your computer to update automatically, or check manually once a month.
Windows: Start → Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates Mac: Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update
✅ Empty Your Recycle Bin/Trash
Files you delete go to the Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (Mac) and continue taking up space until you empty it. Make it a habit to empty it monthly.
Every Three Months
✅ Clean Up Your Downloads Folder
Your Downloads folder is a magnet for clutter — old installers, documents you've already dealt with, random files you downloaded once and forgot about. Sort through it quarterly and delete what you don't need.
✅ Uninstall Programs You Don't Use
Every program installed on your computer takes up disk space and may be running background processes. Go through your installed programs list and remove anything you haven't used in the past six months.
Windows: Settings → Apps → Installed apps Mac: Finder → Applications → drag unused apps to Trash
✅ Clear Your Browser Cache
Your browser stores temporary files, images, and data from websites you visit. Over time this cache can grow to several gigabytes and actually slow down your browsing. Clear it quarterly.
Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Clear Data Safari: Safari menu → Clear History
Every Six Months
✅ Run a Malware Scan
Even if you have antivirus software, running a dedicated malware scan with a second tool can catch things your primary antivirus misses. Windows Defender (built into Windows 10/11) is a solid option. Malwarebytes offers a free version that's excellent for periodic scans.
✅ Check Your Hard Drive Health
Hard drives give warning signs before they fail — if you know where to look. Windows has a built-in tool called SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) that monitors drive health.
A free tool called CrystalDiskInfo (Windows) gives you a clear health status for your drives. If it shows "Caution" or "Bad," back up your data immediately and call us.
✅ Update Your Passwords
Reusing passwords across multiple sites is one of the biggest security risks for home computer users. Every six months, update the passwords for your most important accounts — email, banking, and any account with payment information.
Consider using a password manager like Bitwarden (free) or 1Password to generate and store strong, unique passwords.
Once a Year
✅ Clean the Physical Hardware
Dust is the enemy of computers. It clogs vents, insulates heat, and causes components to overheat and throttle their performance. Once a year, give your computer a physical cleaning.
For desktops: Open the case and use compressed air to blow out dust from the fans, heatsink, and vents. Do this outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
For laptops: Use compressed air to blow through the vents. If your laptop runs hot, it may need a more thorough internal cleaning — this is something we do regularly on service calls.
For keyboards: Turn it upside down and gently shake. Use compressed air between the keys.
✅ Verify Your Backups Are Working
Having a backup is only useful if it actually works. Once a year, test your backup by trying to restore a file from it. Make sure your external drive is still functioning and your cloud backup is current.
✅ Review Your Startup Programs
Over the course of a year, new programs accumulate in your startup list. Review it annually and disable anything that doesn't need to run at boot.
Windows: Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → Startup apps tab Mac: System Settings → General → Login Items
✅ Check Your Antivirus Subscription
Many antivirus subscriptions expire quietly without notifying you clearly. Check that your subscription is active and your virus definitions are up to date.
✅ Consider a Professional Tune-Up
Even if you follow this checklist diligently, a professional tune-up once a year can catch things you might miss — driver updates, deeper malware scans, hardware health checks, and performance optimizations that require technical expertise.
