Before you spend $800 on a new machine, know this: in most cases, a slow computer can be fixed — often for a fraction of the cost of replacement.
Here are the seven repairs our technicians perform most often to bring sluggish computers back to full speed.
1. Upgrade to a Solid-State Drive (SSD)
If your computer still has a traditional spinning hard drive (HDD), this single upgrade will make the biggest difference of anything on this list. SSDs are 5–10x faster than mechanical drives for everyday tasks like booting Windows, opening programs, and loading files.
What you'll notice: Boot times drop from 2–3 minutes to under 20 seconds. Programs open instantly. The computer feels like a completely different machine.

2. Add More RAM
RAM (memory) is what your computer uses to run programs simultaneously. If you're running Windows 10 or 11 with only 4GB of RAM, your computer is constantly swapping data to the hard drive just to keep up — which is slow and hard on the drive.
Signs you need more RAM:
- The computer slows dramatically when multiple browser tabs are open
- Programs take a long time to switch between
- You hear the hard drive constantly spinning even when you're not doing much
The fix: Upgrading from 4GB to 8GB or 16GB of RAM is one of the most cost-effective performance improvements available. Most laptops and desktops support it.
3. Remove Malware and Bloatware
Malware running silently in the background consumes CPU, RAM, and network bandwidth — all while hiding from you. Even without a full-blown virus, many computers accumulate unwanted software (bloatware) that loads at startup and never stops running.
What we do: A full malware scan and removal, followed by a startup program audit to disable anything that doesn't need to run when Windows boots. This alone can cut boot times in half on heavily loaded machines.
Signs this is your problem: High CPU or disk usage in Task Manager even when you're not doing anything, browser redirects, or unexpected pop-up ads.
4. Clean Out Dust and Replace Thermal Paste
This one surprises people. When a computer overheats, it automatically throttles its processor speed to protect itself — which makes everything feel slow and sluggish. Dust-clogged vents and dried-out thermal paste are the two most common causes of overheating.

5. Free Up Hard Drive Space
Windows needs free space on your drive to operate efficiently — for virtual memory, temporary files, and system updates. When a drive gets above 85–90% full, performance degrades noticeably.
Quick wins:
- Empty the Recycle Bin (you'd be surprised how many people never do this)
- Run Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files and old Windows update files
- Move photos, videos, and documents to an external drive or cloud storage
- Uninstall programs you no longer use
If your drive is consistently full, an SSD upgrade with larger capacity (see #1) solves both problems at once.
6. Reinstall Windows
Sometimes a computer has accumulated so many software conflicts, corrupted files, and registry errors over the years that a clean Windows installation is the most efficient path to full performance. This is especially true for machines that are 3–5 years old and have never been reinstalled.

Signs this is your problem: The computer is slow to start but feels normal once Windows loads, the clock keeps resetting to the wrong time, or you see BIOS error messages on startup.
