1. Too Many Programs Starting at Boot
Every time you install a new program, it often adds itself to your startup list. Over time, you can end up with dozens of programs all trying to load the moment you turn on your computer — most of which you don't even use.
This is one of the most common causes of slow startup times and general sluggishness. Your computer is spending all its resources launching programs you didn't ask for.
The fix: We audit your startup programs and disable the ones that don't need to run automatically. This alone can cut boot times in half.
2. A Full or Fragmented Hard Drive
When your hard drive gets close to full, your computer slows down significantly. Windows and macOS need free space to create temporary files, run virtual memory, and perform basic operations. When that space runs out, everything grinds to a halt.
On older computers with traditional spinning hard drives (HDDs), fragmentation is also a factor — files get scattered across the disk in pieces, and the drive has to work harder to read them.
The fix: We clean up junk files, temporary files, and old downloads to free up space. For HDDs, we run a defragmentation. For computers that would benefit most, we can also discuss upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD), which is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make.
3. Malware Running in the Background
Viruses, spyware, and other malware often run hidden processes that consume your CPU and memory without you knowing. If your computer slowed down suddenly and unexpectedly, malware is always on our checklist.

4. Outdated Drivers or Operating System
Drivers are the software that lets your operating system communicate with your hardware. Outdated drivers can cause all kinds of performance problems, from slow graphics to sluggish Wi-Fi to general instability.
Similarly, skipping Windows or macOS updates means missing performance improvements and bug fixes that can make a real difference.
The fix: We update your drivers and operating system to the latest stable versions, resolving compatibility issues and applying performance improvements.
5. Overheating
Computers are designed to slow themselves down when they get too hot — a process called thermal throttling. If your laptop fan is running constantly, or your desktop feels unusually warm, overheating may be causing your slowdown.
Dust buildup inside the machine is the most common culprit. Over time, dust clogs the vents and cooling fans, trapping heat inside.
The fix: We clean the interior of your machine, clear the vents, and replace thermal paste on the processor if needed. This can make a dramatic difference, especially on laptops that are a few years old.
6. Too Little RAM for What You're Doing
RAM (Random Access Memory) is your computer's short-term workspace. When you run out of it, your computer starts using your hard drive as overflow — which is much, much slower.
If you regularly have many browser tabs open, use photo or video editing software, or run multiple programs at once, you may simply need more RAM.
The fix: We diagnose whether RAM is the bottleneck and, if so, can recommend and install an upgrade. RAM upgrades are often affordable and can give an older machine a new lease on life.
7. A Failing Hard Drive
Hard drives don't last forever. As they age, they can develop bad sectors — areas of the disk that are damaged and slow to read. A failing hard drive will cause your computer to slow down, freeze, and eventually stop working altogether.
This is one situation where acting quickly matters. A failing drive can take your data with it.
